Little Creek Casino Resort today unveils the Salish Cliffs Golf Club logo, which draws inspiration from ancient legend and evokes the spiritual heritage of the Squaxin Island Indian Tribe.

The logo was designed by Little Creek Casino Resort in conjunction with Graphic Concepts Inc. of Olympia, Wash. The richly colored logo – centered on a rounded-mouth symbol representing a speaker, singer, or one who calls the spirits – is patterned after a petroglyph, thousands of years old, found on a large stone in the area called the “Love Rock” on Hartstene Island in Puget Sound. Covered in carvings, the “Love Rock” was so named for a young couple from the tribal village who would meet there to make plans for their future together.

The Salish Cliffs logo conveys the ancient legend depicted in the petroglyph found on the “Love Rock.” The story is of a strong (“skookum”) young man who was captivated by the beauty of a young Salish woman; she was equally enraptured by his unusual spirit strength. Her ability to run like the wind was known throughout the land, while his gift for helping people with his spirit power was equally renowned. The young Salish woman had been promised to another man in marriage, and set forth on a spirit quest to the cliffs near her village searching for a way out of the arrangement. Near the cliffs the young man was singing his power song. Using spirit power he helped the Salish woman change into the Red-tailed Hawk so she could be near him always. To this day near the Salish Cliffs the beautiful Red-tailed Hawk can be seen and heard, while nearby the waters of Skookum Inlet are said to whisper spirit power to those who listen.
